Band Awards Night23rd July 2006 |
After a ten year gap, the Band committee decided that it was time to resurrect the annual Band Awards, and combine this with a social evening. Holding the event after our last concert before the summer break seemed to be both a good idea, and a popular idea, and the Band pub - The Minerva - proved to be the ideal venue.
So after an afternoon concert at the Valley Gardens, Withernsea, the Band reassembled on the banks of the Humber for the evening.

Peter's hand, Jane, Maurice, Jackie, Stewart's head and Kathy.

Slight overlap from the last picture as we continue our tour of the table starting with Maurice's arm, Jackie, Kathy, Margo (almost completely obscured by Dixon), Dixon, and Stewart's head.

Just in case the official photographers don't catch her best side, Julia shoots herself with a camera phone.

If anyone can tell me what Barry is up to here, please let me know!!

Having been trained by Kirsty for years, Dave waits patiently for the female cornettist to finish speaking. The more observant of you will have noticed that he placed himself superbly in front of an emergency exit!

Great action shot this - no one is actually looking at the camera. Margaret and Barry Mathews, and Jo.

And carrying on the theme of not looking at the camera, Barry and Jo. Vicky gets it wrong by glaring straight at the lens.

And so onto the main part of the evening, our hosts for the awards Cat Deeley and Terry Wogan. (On the television above is the FHM 100 sexiest videos - of course no one took any notice of that!!!!).

This must have been the announcement for the Elder Statesman of the Band, Pete gradually moves his beer towards the table ready to accept his award, much to the amusement of Jane and Mark.

Steve returns from the podium with his Band New Zealander award. It was a close run thing for this award given that we only have the one New Zealander in the Band!

Shaun Davey receives the Most Improved Musician award.
He was up on his feet later to receive the Band Softie award.

Jez receives the Jez Kearney Early To Bed Award.

Jez and Shaun - They're not responsible for the empty bottles and glasses.

Also awarded on the night, were the commemorative medals from the Band's performance at the reopening of Hull's East Park. Danny and Andrew celebrate with more Magners (Andrew) and more Gateaux (Danny).

Out of the picture left, Dixon continues another marathon joke telling session, entertaining everybody apart from Andrew, who is just catching another 40 winks!

Kirsty relaxes before being called up to be presented with the 'Person Contributing Most to the Band during the past 12 months' award.
The two main award winners, Kirsty and Shaun.

After a long slow walk back to his table, the Band Granddad relaxes with a well deserved beer.

Andrea and husband Andy lulled into a false sense of security, before the heavy mob approached to discuss with Andy the vacant cornet position.

Obviously a lull in the proceedings in this corner of the room. Some people wait for the musical chairs to begin, whilst others watch number 43 in the video count down. As for Alison, she's obviously been distracted, nearly at the end of this page, and this is the first picture she has managed to get in.
And the second!
Steve proudly displays his medal in the background.

And the third, making it this time to centre stage.

Towards the end of the evening, Dixon continues to entertain on one table, whilst Chairman John interrogates Danny on the other.

Note the lack of beer in the glasses. It's obviously that time when no one could be bothered to go to the bar because as they stood up, that voice would be heard, "Are you going to the bar? Just get me a ......."

Maurice and Jacky.......how many empties?

Andrea, Andy, Mark, Pete, Jane and Maurice.

Vicky and dad Stewart.
Stewart was the recipient of a special award after leaving wife Mel in Howden with their car.......................................................................................................... but taking the car keys to the afternoon concert in Withernsea, over fifty miles away.

Towards the end of the evening some of the Band ventured out onto the river bank to enjoy the sunset.

Just in case there was any doubt about our surroundings, we held our evening at The Minerva.
The picture on the left is the same as the one above but from a different angle. On the right Kathy swapped with the camera with Tony, and Mel joined the group after taking many of the above pictures.
Not sure about those legs though!

Shaun, Kirsty and a tree.

The evening was a great success, and very enjoyable.
Kirsty and Shaun the two main and serious award winners remind us really why we were there - to celebrate the success of the Band over the past twelve months.
