Hi Everyone. Looks like we will be following
your Band again at the Contest! At that time we will be touring NZ
in our motor-home so won't have a computer, but Steve will text us the
results. He is so pleased to be going over to England again and meeting up
with all his old friends.
All the best for the Contest and our thoughts are with you. Lesley & Reg Rudhall |

Good morning. Both myself and my wife wish to
thank you for the superb concert on Saturday. We are enthusiastic attendees
at as many concerts as possible, and this one was one of the very best in
performance and content that we can remember for a long time. We often
find that there is at least one piece of music in concerts that we do not
appreciate, but last night was an exception. Keep up the good work.
Regards David & Pat Guy |

I just had to write and congratulate you on a
fantastic performance, from a small age I have always loved the brass band and as I had not been well for a while, my best friend said she was going to cheer me up (her 2 children sing with the co-op choir) and she bought me a ticket for the performance on Thursday night. Wow, I was totally blown away and just had to write and tell you the humour went so brilliantly with the performance and would like to congratulate all your members, but must say two stood out to me - Neil Johnson and Andrew Kennedy - they were fantastic. I am sure you get told that a lot, but sometimes not enough, and Mr Lippeatt was brilliant and getting us all involved. Since coming home I have looked up your site and see you are coming to Scunthorpe and will be trying to get tickets. Its ironic really I had my 40th birthday this year and would have loved to have had a brass band or at least got to see one now I have and it was brilliant so thank you to one and all for cheering me up, and making me have the most enjoyable night I have had in a long time. May your success long continue. Donna Ellis x |

I am so pleased to read about the success the
band has had over the years and the way it has maintained it. It is
16 years since I played percussion with what was then the City of Hull
Band and had the pleasure of playing in several concerts and a couple of
contests. It was reading of the death of Maurice Metcalfe which prompted me to write. One of the nicest men I ever met and a true supporter of the band in that he was present for rehearsals, concerts, contests, social events and just about anything and everything the band did. I've still got good memories of Maurice and the time I spent with the band both musically and socially. Please pass on my good wishes to his family David Ashbridge, former member. |

On behalf of the Hessle
Town Council’s Events Committee, may I formally thank you for taking
part at the Christmas Lights Switch-on, which successfully took place on
Friday 20th November 2009. Your time your talents and your
organisation all added to this event being successful, and without people
like you this event would not have gone as smoothly as it did. May I also take this
opportunity in wishing you all the best for Christmas and the New Year.
Once again many, many thanks. Councillor Liz Kersey. Chairman of the Events Committee |

Thank you all for a wonderful evening on
Saturday at Toll Gavel, I truly enjoyed watching you all play again. I think that you really made an impact on my fiancé - we went in memory of my Granddad, as my fiancé couldn't make the Memorial Concert - but he really enjoyed himself, and as coming with me again to watch you all in the future. I really found the Euphonium Duet a laugh, Neil & Andrew made it so enjoyable to watch, and they made a great Laurel and Hardy. Thank you all for a great night and I hope to see you all in the future, good luck with any upcoming contests, and take care. My regards Natalie Metcalfe XxxxX |
| 21/10/2009 |
Hope all is well. I went yesterday as you know to the Nationals, and heard all of the bands like I do. I was gob-smacked when I saw where EYMS had come. No way was your band last!!!! I'd got you 10th and in my opinion, Northop last. Newstead, Pemberton, Kirkintilloch were just a bit better than that, I was also amazed at Desfords placing as well. At least the top 4 they were right, Nick with Dyke was just awesome, and Bob with Cory likewise. Fodens were great, and I felt Rothwell gave a really fresh clean performance as well. I would not have liked to have been in the box trying to sort out the top 3 well places 2&3. The piece was a fantastic piece and it was good to see the hall fairly full when lesser bands were on stage rather than about 100 that sometimes are in. Anyway take it from me that your band put on a really good show and the result you got did not reflect your performance at all. All the best, take care. Ian Perks |
| 19/10/2009 |
Well done at the contest, I think the result
was damn bad luck as the band impressed a lot of people. That's contesting
and the result, as ever, only lasts till the next contest. Sadly it's the
one that goes down on paper.
My congratulations to the band for such a great show in every way. Alan Hope. Regional Secretary |

.....what a lovely evening (Saturday 26th
September) - please could you pass on our really warm thanks to everyone
involved. It was excellent - top class music, lots of enthusiasm, fun, -
and not the least, seeing so many of our old friends.

This is a note to all the members of the EYMS
Band who played in the Memorial Concert on Saturday night. Thank you
for making it such a special night for me, and my family. My granddad Maurice would be very proud of you all, and he would have been so thrilled to know that even though he has gone he will be remembered by people who loved working with him during his time with the Band. I will be attending the concert in Cottingham in December, and look forward to a fabulous show. Keep up the excellent work. Natalie Louise Metcalfe - Granddaughter of Maurice Metcalfe |
| 28/09/2009 |
I would like to say a really big thank you to the whole band on behalf of all the Metcalfe family for such a fantastic night at my father’s memorial concert. A big thank you to Bob Childs for his lovely stories about my father and also to Stan Lippeatt for entertaining us all. Please pass on our regards to David Childs and hope he is much better very soon. We look forward to hearing him next year. We all feel so proud to hear how highly thought of and respected my father was. We will be thinking of you on the 17th October and wish you all the very best of luck at the National Brass Band Championships. We look forward to your concert on the 12th December at St Mary’s. Once again thank you. Sarah Metcalfe |
| 28/09/2009 |
May I ask you to pass on my personal thanks and also the thanks of my colleagues in St John to the Members of the EYMS Band who played at our annual service in The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Cottingham last Sunday. Having the band present made a significant difference to the occasion and raised the service to new standards. Our Members and Guests commented on how much they enjoyed the service and this was due in no small way to your Members playing. Best wishes and kind regards. Andrew Milner. Chairman, Order St John Humberside |
| 23/09/2009 |
Just
a short note to thank all of you for supporting us on Sunday – your
contribution made such a difference to the service and was greatly
appreciated by all. I
do appreciate that there are many demands on your time and for you all to
give up a Sunday afternoon to play for us, was most kind. I
thoroughly enjoyed listening to the quintet and look forward to the next
opportunity to listen to the Band. Thank
you, once again for all your kind assistance and I trust you will convey
my appreciation to all concerned. With
kind regards Richard Wright. Executive Director, St John Ambulance |

Once again, thank-you for your welcome
Newsletter. It is so good to hear all about you.
Looking forward to seeing/hearing you on 5th September "Big Bus" day, and hopefully at Middleton Hall on 26th September. The very best of luck on 17th October at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Kind regards to all. Margaret Walker |
| 10/07/2009 |
Thoroughly enjoyed the concert: from the
sparkling start Lohengrin ( I have a very scratched 1957 version
played by 'Men o Brass') to the thunderous ending of Procession to the
Minster with a varied middle of excellent soloists and variety of music.
The Band goes from strength to strength, has a lovely sound but I
especially appreciated the control and tunefulness of the quieter
'long notes'.
I always feel inspired to go home and practice after listening to EYMS. I see that the band has a very busy
schedule not often enough around Bridlington, but Cockermouth must have
been a day and a half. We were there 2 weeks ago to visit Wordsworth's
house but at least we started from Grange over Sands! Trevor Cardwell |
| 05/07/2009 |
Hi Guys, Just a line to say thank you for a most enjoyable evening at The United Reformed Church in Cockermouth tonight. The music was excellent, thoroughly entertaining, and you had the audience eating out of your hands right from the word go, with that opening piece, Lohengrin. It must be quite a difficult task to play something usually associated with an orchestra, in brass, never mind to do as you did, that is, bring it up to orchestral standard! That could have been LSO playing tonight! Absolutely loved the entertainment factor as well. I believe it's most important to keep an audience with you, and the mixture of excellent musical standards interspersed with a little light comedy and high jinks worked an absolute treat. Too many times, I have been to concerts that get bogged down with high brow stuff, and, whilst they may be technically brilliant, tend to lose the audience a bit as a result. You had us in the palms of your hands right up to the encore. I am a member of a small, seedling band here in West Cumbria, namely Cleator Moor Brass (CMB), and about half our own members were in your audience tonight. I'm sure I speak for the rest of them as well as myself when I say we drew some positive inspiration from you tonight. We are slowly building a repertoire of good tunes, but may have a bit of a way to go before we meet on the same stage! Our latest project is to launch a youth section, and try to encourage the next generation into what could give them a lifetime of pleasure, as well as keep this vital part of our culture & heritage alive, and a future to look forward to. Anyone interested can find out more on www.cleatormoorbrass.co.uk Anyway, thanks once again, and please do come back to Cumbria soon! Lyndon Fish Bass Trombone, Cleator Moor Band |
| 16/06/2009 |
Just a line to say thanks very much for the
concert/contest last night. Most of our players turned out to listen and
were very impressed and really enjoyed the evening.
See you on the 8th November Colin Moss |

Hi Mel
Hope you all got back ok! I just wanted to say thank you to you, Stan and the band for this weekend. It was a pleasure to play with the band and to meet everyone. It's not often at these kind of things that the band I have been thrown upon are so welcoming and friendly. Could you pass on my thanks to everyone and send my best wishes. Many thanks again Lesley Howie x |

I’m an ex-pat (actually a bass trombone player) now living in France, and I go to Amboise each year with my wife for my annual “Brass Band Fix” (there are no brass bands where we now live). It was a pleasure to see and hear EYMS and the gala concert was absolutely fantastic! Talk about stamina! There were some “big blows” in that programme. All very entertaining! Well done! I’ve attached a photo taken at your march contest. Regards Nev James

Just simple words to tell the great pleasure
I had yesterday during the Concert of the EYMS Band in Amboise. What a
show, I just want to thank all of the band, and your director for
the fantastic moment I have had with all my friends to hear your
wonderful band (special thanks to the Flugel Horn player, I love the
sound and the musicality of this young woman).
Congratulations and again thanks a lot

Hello Everyone
Best wishes on a great win. I
thought Sunday was our best performance and I wasn't surprised when I
got the phone call off Mel to say we won. All the soloists played great!
It was a solid performance from all. My inbox is full of complimentary
comments from well wishers and it was a lovely feeling to conduct my old
band again. I was pleased to hear John won the sop prize, the canon was
spot on. Was there ever any doubt the basses wouldn't win 'Best Basses?'
Neil Cornet should have been given the cornet prize, (he was a star all
week) and somebody should tell the organisers to make a euph prize so
Neil Euph can pick it up.
Massive thanks to Mel and Stew for looking after me.
Great success for the rest of the
year.

Hi All
BLOODY FANTASTIC
Congratulations to you all, brill result,
right chuffed for everyone, well done.
Good luck in Blackpool, unfortunately, I
won't be there this year as my first child will be born on the 9th
May, bad planning for a bandsman that one. Little boy due, don't
worry he won't be a cornet player, something to do with genetics ha
ha.
Keep up the good results, Cheers

I was very sad to hear of
Maurice's passing. I used to play in the Hull Youth Brass Band and the
City of Hull Youth Symphony Orchestra in the late 70's early 80's and
remember Maurice very well from then as being very helpful to everyone he
met, as well as being a great supporter of music in Hull in many ways (I
am sure he gave me many lifts as well as help with my valves from time to
time!) My condolences to his family

Many thanks for all your efforts and fine contribution to a very successful Massed Band Concert at the Sage. I’ve had a lot of positive feed back and it was clear the large audience had a great time.
I do hope your musicians enjoyed the experience- please pass on my thanks and best wishes.

I was very sad to learn today about Maurice’s passing this October. I grew up playing 2nd cornet with the band, and remember Maurice very fondly indeed. As a “nipper” having my first taste of “banding”, Maurice was my band ”granddad”. He was ever-present, usually found smiling away whilst shifting chairs, fixing valves, or offering words of support and encouragement, even though he was usually as nervous (or more nervous!!!) than the players! He looked after us all not only at rehearsals, but onto the bus, off the bus, onto the stage, and even back onto the bus after the inevitable post-contest drinks. I am very pleased to see that the band are still doing very well indeed, which is in no small part due to the hard work that Maurice tirelessly and selflessly put in. His commitment was way above and beyond the call of duty, and the concert planned for September next year will be a wonderful and fitting tribute – if I’m anywhere near East Yorkshire I will definitely be there. Best Regards Euan Mann. New York |
| 28/10/2008 |
May I say how sorry I am to learn of
Maurice's death - he was a real ambassador for the Band and I know he
will be sadly missed. Please pass on our condolences to his
family.

On behalf of the whole family, I would like to
thank you all for giving my Father the best possible send off. You all did
him proud.
We are all very touched by the Memorial Concert next year. We think it is a fantastic idea as he was such a special man. Thank you all again, we will keep in touch. Kind Regards The Metcalfe Family. |
| 26/10/2008 |
Maurice Metcalfe – the words that have been written here about him before mine, describe him as he was. To me he was a friend, a gentleman, and devoted member of our Band. I first became associated with the Band in 1990. My husband Stewart joined the Band on Soprano Cornet to play with them after their first contest in the fourth section. He remained a member for some years, moving into the Championship Section with the Band, and was a member of the Band that played at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time in 1996, gaining their best result there yet. Maurice was such a proud man that day.
For us, this was a family band with Bob Childs - my brother - at the helm. Our family band included Maurice, his wife Monica, and their son Andy. They were very special times for us all.
After a short break Stewart returned to the Band and the family that we loved so much – EYMS Band - our daughter Vicki, also became a part of that family. We all have a special relationship with each other in the Band, one you don’t often get, we all look after each other, and Maurice was certainly the ‘father’ of this family.
I will miss him dearly - who will make me a cup of coffee and chat to me now when I sit in rehearsals for two hours……
This has been a difficult time for us all, and I would like to thank Tony Newiss for all the communication he has had with Maurice's family, and for making the arrangements with them on behalf of the Band. I would also like to thank Mark Unsworth for keeping the Band, and our friends, up to date with the funeral arrangements through the website, for paying a special tribute to Maurice with his caring words on the News page, and for the emotional task of posting the tributes made to Maurice on the Guest Book. When I have read these tributes they have touched me, they have raised a tear and a smile, thanks Mark this must have been difficult for you at times, but for all of us in the EYMS family and the Metcalfe family I know they have helped.
Melanie Kennedy |
| 24/10/2008 |
On behalf of the whole family I would like to
thank the EYMS Brass Band for their wonderful performance at my
Grandfathers funeral. It was truly amazing, and I know he would have loved
it. Many thanks Stephanie Metcalfe (Granddaughter) xxx |
| 23/10/2008 |
Bob
and I were very saddened to hear of Maurice's death. Whenever we
went to a concert Maurice would be somewhere near the door, looking very
smart, busy with different jobs but he always made time to
have a word or two with us. He was a real gentlemen who worked very
hard for the Band and its players, and he will be sorely missed by so
many. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family, friends and
all the members of the Band. Margaret and Bob Unsworth |
| 23/10/2008 |
On behalf of the North of England Regional Committee, I would like to add our condolences to the family of Maurice and to the Band, of which we know he was such a pivotal part. Maurice became a good friend over the years of myself and of other members of the Regional Committee, and as a band secretary he was a gentleman in everything that he did, and the way he did things. I have no doubt that the success of E.Y.M.S. Band in such a few short years was a testament to his efforts. Alan Hope. Regional Secretary |
| 22/10/2008 |
Thank you for the wonderful comments you have
made regarding my Grandfather. I never realised he was appreciated by, and
touched the hearts of so many different people. Your comments mean the
world to me, and my family. I know his memory will live on, and I hope all
of you at EYMS Brass Band will help us to remember him for the kind-hearted,
well mannered man he was. Even though he has gone - he is still
watching over us and will be a part of me forever.

| 20/10/2008 |
We were very saddened to hear of our mate
Maurice's death. He was a lovely guy who never raised his voice or
said a bad thing about anyone. He was always helpful in a myriad of
ways; his love for the band was genuine and unusual for one who
never played a brass instrument. He was very proud of the band and
of Hull. Maurice will be sorely missed by us, and we have
many fond memories of him.
Kind regards
Steve & Alice Rudhall. New Zealand |
| 16/10/2008 |
Though not having been an active member for
EYMS for a couple of years, I have fond memories of Maurice. He was so
very kind, and always thought of others, rather than himself. He did so
much for EYMS and will be missed immensely by people of the band, and many
others I'm sure - myself certainly. He seemed to happy with life when he'd recently become so much more mobile with his "new" knees. So sad to have it all taken away again, so soon after. I hope he is at peace. Sophie Rees |
| 16/10/2008 |
I was very saddened to hear the news of
the passing of Maurice Metcalfe, he was a pillar of strength for the band
and also personally for my wife some seven years ago when she was going
through a dark time in her life. He will be sadly missed by all that knew
him, please pass on my sincere condolences to all his family.
Carl Robinson (Ex EYMS) |
| 16/10/2008 |
We would like to pass on our condolences to Maurice’s family after the terrible loss of a true Gent. The work that he put in to the Band was relentless. The fact that his son played in the Band during the early days and then moved on, never stopped Maurice continually working for the Band for many years to come. His ability to repair instruments from rolling out dents to major reconstruction was fantastic. As much as he envied the players in the Band, we envied his ability to magic these instruments back to working order. It was a pleasure to have known Maurice and he will be greatly missed. Steve, Mel, Dave, and Garry Ornsby. |
| 16/10/2008 |
Sorry to hear about Maurice - he was a really
nice guy. I'm sure he'd have been proud of you all on Saturday.

Please pass on my thoughts to Maurice's family
at this sad time.
Maurice was the
quiet man behind the success of the EYMS Band. |
| 15/10/2008 |
Just a few words to say how much I know his
family and the band will miss such a special person. His dedication
to the EYMS band was unprecedented. After spending many hours with
him at band rehearsals, when we always tried to put the world to rights
and solve his daily crossword.
Ex treasurer Linda, Mel, and Dean Addinell |

I am truly devastated to receive the sad news about Maurice. I never met him but we talked a lot on the phone and he was a true gentleman who inspired respect and affection. There are few people like him. The band members must be very sad, not to mention his family. On a brighter note I am pleased your weekend was a success and that you had a very good result. I am so
very shocked and saddened to hear the news that Maurice has passed away.
He was a good friend to me during my three years as MD of the band and
even repaired my beloved bespoke Bach cornet - it has never played so
freely - he was a real craftsman, loyal friend and supporter - please
pass on my sincere condolences to his family.
It was great to see you all at the Mews on Saturday and especially Kathy looking so well - I am extremely proud of the Band's continued success. Jim Davies |
| 13/10/2008 |
I would like to convey my sincere condolences
to the family of Maurice Metcalfe and the band on their sad loss. For the
short time I knew Maurice I always found him to be an extremely genuine person
in every sense of the word, and a man who always upheld the true spirit of
brass banding.
Kevin Dickson-Lane. Former member |
| 13/10/2008 |
I am truly stunned at the passing of Maurice. I know many people have said it already but he truly was a real gent. Considering he was never (to my knowledge) a player he took a real interest in the workings of the band and was always offering assistance and was keen to help in any way he could – it could probably be said that his attendance at rehearsals was more regular than some of the players. As a West Country boy we often had a discussion on our differing accents … I could sometimes never understand him and he could often not understand me … but between us both we managed to communicate. He was a true bandsman, who never played a wrong note, and my time with EYMS in my student days will always include Maurice as an integral part of those memories. My condolences to his family and friends and players he has left behind. My best wishes to all concerned. Austin Fews |

So sad to hear of Maurice's death. He was a
lovely man, always quick to smile. Our condolences to both his families,
his real one and EYMS Band.

Really sad to hear of Maurice's passing, such
a lovely man and a true servant to the band. Even my mother commented on
what a gentleman he was after speaking with him just once on the phone
regarding a secretarial issue when she was secretary at St. Austell. Our
thoughts are with all of the band and Maurice's friends and family at this
time. I know he would have been proud of the band's performance and result
on Saturday, as he always was of all the band's performances.

I heard the very sad news about Maurice
and wanted to pass on my condolences to the band.
In 1995, as a student in Hull, Maurice was
the person who contacted me and he was such a warm and polite man. His
commitment to the band was always second to none and, it's
been said by others, he really was a gentleman.

Tony, I'm so sad to hear the news, but thanks
so much for letting me know. I'll miss hearing his voice, even

Had a good listen to the band's CD earlier;
its very enjoyable - great soloists and a good quality of sound, very
sonorous - just a big warm sound !! Reminds me of my days with
Manchester CWS in the 60's
Kind regards,

Congratulations on Spring Belle Vue win. Great news and I’m told much deserved. Please pass on my best wishes and congratulations to those who will remember me. All the best for now and hope to see you around before long Regards John Gillam |

Congratulations
on a superb performance at Blackpool and thoroughly deserved victory,
turning out to be a very impressive year, well done to everyone.
I’m glad you’ve been promoted as I’m not sure I’d relish the
thought of battling with you next year after our promotion also. All
the best for the continuing year.

Congratulation to the band and all concerned in the latest victory at the Senior Cup. My brother now plays for Jaguar (Coventry) Band – who came third – but says the victory was well deserved and an obvious winning performance. Look forward to your progression to the Grand Shield …. And onto the ‘Open’ ? Best wishes to all and congratulations again. Austin Fews |

Read the results after returning from Rome where I was fortunate enough to play solos in the St. Peter's Basilica and the Pantheon. "Congratulations", I knew you could do it again, and I'm proud of you!!! This is excellent preparation for the Senior Cup! The Band must now concentrate and perform with confidence to win the next one - it is your Year!!! Best wishes Jim Davies |

I just want to say that your performance of
Festival Music at the Area was outstanding and on the day unbeatable. Must have been that drawn number one thing yet again. Also give Bob Childs my best regards. Kind Regards Clive Parker |

What a wonderful night my wife and I had at
the Hessle Town Hall concert on the 1st March. This was the first time I
had seen the Band. The music far exceeded my expectations and was so
enjoyable that I will definitely be attending future concerts. The light
entertainment provided by Andrew Kennedy was excellent - he's a natural
comedian as well as a fabulous musician. I left the concert overwhelmed by
the talent of the Band, and had to buy a CD to remind me of a wonderful
night.

Will you please thank each and every member
of The East Yorkshire Motor Services Brass Band, what a
lovely evening we had. Everyone in the audience so enjoyed your
expertise. I listened to comments as
the everyone made their way home, and they were all of praise and
admiration for a splendid night of music. It was very touching to see so
many of the audience make their way to their seats with the help of
their walking sticks used by shaky hands. I overheard one gentleman
say he had been looking forward to the evening since it had first been
advertised.
Mr Ken Dunn and my son, Richard, who lead
the expedition to Malealea, would like to thank you most sincerely for
giving your time and talents to such a worthy cause. We can help so many
young Orphans in Malealea, Lesotho to continue their education in High
School. The Orphans sponsored have to
show excellent potential and pledge to educate their own brothers
and sisters (a very big commitment). The
first pupils to be sponsored in 2003 (three of them) have, on
January 1st 2008 begun a degree course at Capetown University. Mr
Dunn is so delighted for them and this makes the
work so very worthwhile. That is why I have pledged that every
penny raised will go to the education of these young people.
I know I am thinking in advance but would
you consider coming once again to The Plowright Theatre for the
same cause next Year about the same weekend as this? I will of course
have to book the Theatre but would appreciate your views on this.
Thank you again
Kind Regards
Sheila Ashley

I saw the Band on Saturday night at the

entertainment I have had in a long while.

May I say on behalf of several friends who
attended your concert at The Plowright on Saturday, how much we all
enjoyed your show. We were all of the opinion that the content was rather
more varied than some we have been to, with a good balance between the light-hearted
and the classical. Thanks for a most enjoyable evening.

Regarding the photo of the Band in the
archive, the one taken in Victoria Galleries in the City Hall. It is
myself, Louise Dalby, on the front row next to Melanie Kennedy. I played
Cornet with the Band in the early 1990's, I used to be taught by Dixon
Laing when I was at 6th form college. I can't remember the exact years I
played with the Band, but I had to leave probably around 1992 when I
started work as a nurse, as my shift work left me unable to commit to the
Band.

To all members of the Band. I was at your
Christmas concert in Scunthorpe a fortnight ago. It was a wonderful
evenings entertainment. As always the Band was superb, unforgettable. I
look forward to seeing you, and hearing that unique sound at the Plowright
on the 26th. Thanking you for your music, and wishing you every success in
the coming year.

Hi there, my name is Doug Jobling, and I
played Bass Trombone for EYMS band back in late 1992, to 94'ish. I guess
the passage of time has made me want to check out the current progression
of the group, and I am very happy to hear of your successes! The purpose
of this email is to try help with the first photograph on the Archive
Pictures page of your website. I am on the back row, the middle row is Sam
Orwin, and the missing name on the front row as far as I can remember, is
Adrian Bell. The photo was taken in the Wold Road Primary School's main
hall.
Many thanks for the walk down memory lane, and I wish all the best for the future of the band. Regards, Doug Jobling |

Just wanted to say a big thank you to the
Quintet for playing so beautifully and helping to make the Museums Quarter
Victorian Christmas event on Sunday such as success - despite the hideous
weather!
I'm so grateful you managed to squeeze us in, considering the short notice. Sorry I didn't manage to see you before you left but I was still running around trying to be in six places at once! Thanks again and best wishes Paula Gentil |

Hi Mark - sorry for the belated reply, but
it's just to say a big thank you for the CD which arrived some time ago. I
was delighted to be involved and listening to the results, glad I was
asked .......... it's pretty good innit!

Hi to all at EYMS
Congratulations on your 12th position at the National Finals! Can I send a few thank you's to Mark Unsworth for helping us out at Stroud at the weekend. A massive and belated thank you to Steve and Alice Rudhall for their true grit in helping us out at Durham Miners Gala in July this year, when there were only 15 of us in total. Thanks again Steve and Alice, hope you have a smooth transaction back home to New Zealand. Regards Andrew Till - Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band |

To Jim Davies and all at the EYMS Band. It was tremendous to see you all again on Saturday at the Nationals and catch up with you at the Mews for a few cups of tea afterwards! I am genuinely delighted for you with your excellent 12th placing in a pretty strong field at the weekend - I know you all work very hard and this will be a good reward for your efforts! I'm looking forward to the release of your latest CD and will see you all again soon I am sure. All the best and many congratulations once again! Shaun Roche. (BBb Bass, Reg Vardy Band). |

I received your new CD. Thank you
very much. There's some great playing
on there. I was impressed by
the playing of Steve Rudhall. Please thank him. You have good
corner men in the band.... not just
"men", Kathy did a nice job
on Time for Peace..... I recently recorded this with
Joe Alessi from the New York Philharmonic. I'll have to
send you one.
I hope you were happy with my contribution to
the program notes. I had forgotten I wrote them. I enjoyed the
playing of my pieces. There was lots
of excitement. All in all it is a great CD. The
important thing is that the band sounds like they
were having fun. Thanks again for sending the CD. It
was a surprise when I opened my mailbox. Please give my best to
the band.....

| 14/07/2007 | Mr Shipp
On Wednesday 11th July, my wife and myself along with the rest of the audience at Priory Church, Bridlington, were treated to an excellent Concert by the EYMS Brass Band which is sponsored by your Company. I would like to give a big thank you to you and your Company for sponsoring such a talented group of musicians. Your sponsorship achieves 3 things - it gives EYMS good publicity, it allows a very good Band to keep performing, and it gives us, the public, very good entertainment. This is a commodity sadly lacking in many cases these days....... Don Stark |
| 12/07/2007 | Loved the concert
with some excellent playing, though the acoustics did not favour you in
the louder pieces. Soloists were very good. I liked especially the euph
and trombone solo (now there's an old one - the piece not the
player)......
...Like the website, very professional, easy to work and UP TO DATE. Excellent. Hope you do well in the finals Regards Trevor Cardwell |
| 11/06/2007 | That's the proper
version of Ol' Man River. I will try to write something tonight or
tomorrow about both arrangements. Thank you in advance for the CD, I look
forward to hearing it.
Good luck with all your endeavours. It sounds like the Band is very busy. My best regards to Jim Davies and the Band. Mark Freeh |

| 21/05/2007 | Hi everyone
Just a quick note to say thanks to you all for making me feel so welcome, and part of the team at the weekend. Special thanks to Kirsty for looking after me on the back row, and to my old mate Neil, who I managed to drink under the table on Saturday (first time ever). Hope all goes well with the tour, and look forward to seeing you all again soon. John Belton, Soprano Wakey Met. (Or is that Makey Wet, Alison?) |
| 07/05/2007 | Hello
Very sorry to hear that Dan and Liz have left the Band. Dan was a founder member of the Band when we formed many years ago. He was a pupil of Dixon Laing and was always a loyal and courageous member when I was the conductor. I don't know Liz as well, but did hear her play recently when she was in Cardiff and I was really impressed by her musicality and technical ability. I wish them both all the best and hope they continue playing. Best wishes Bob Childs |
| 03/04/2007 | I travelled from
Oxfordshire to watch my daughter singing on Sunday and would like to
congratulate you for the quality of performance from the Band. Having only
heard this work played by an orchestra, I was expecting you to be too
powerful for a school choir, but this was not the case. You might have
easily drowned the choir, but instead the playing was sympathetic, with a
lovely tone and depth.
Many thanks David King |
| 20/03/2007 | Many
congratulations on your achievement, you are all stars! Too early to say
if we'll be there but I would like to say we will.

| 19/03/2007 | To all members of
the Band - let us be the first to congratulate you on your wonderful
result today - we are so proud of you all and look forward to hearing a
recording of the piece Isaiah, which incidentally is Steve's Grandfathers
name. Also a bandsman, maybe he was looking over you and guiding you to
greatness!
Will look forward to seeing the points posted on the website, and also is it possible to include the judge's report of your playing? Your Kiwi fans, Lesley & Reg Rudhall |
| 16/03/2007 | To all our friends

Good luck for Sunday The Barton Town Band |
| 07/03/2007 | ...... I greatly
enjoyed coming to an inspiring rehearsal, and I'm sure that the band will
sound great when they get to grips with it. Hopefully it has loads of
colour without being too difficult to enjoy playing. .....
Good Luck with the Areas Philip Wilby |
| 05/03/2007 | Congratulations to
all members of the Band, including those behind the scenes, for giving an
excellent performance at your first concert in Hessle Town Hall. The sound
was superb, as were the chosen pieces played so beautifully by everyone.
Only one downside - the concert was not long enough - we could have listened for another hour at least! Good luck to you in any forthcoming competitions, and we really do look forward to seeing you at the Town Hall again. Sooner rather than later. Kind regards Kathy West - Town Clerk, Hessle Town Council. |
| 05/03/2007 | Thank you very
much. My Husband and I both enjoyed your concert at the Town hall, in
Hessle. we have previously seen you over the years at the All Saints
Church, North Ferriby. The Town Hall is an excellent venue.

| 27/02/2007 | Yes, I thoroughly

Ken Baldwin has asked me to thank you, and your colleagues in the EYMS Brass Band for helping to make yesterdays family fun day such an enjoyable event. We have had a lot of positive feedback from shoppers, and it appears that everyone really enjoyed themselves. Your contribution towards the day was greatly appreciated. Thank you once again on Ken's behalf Alan Baber City Centre Bid Administrator |

| 06/11/2006 | I just wanted to let you know
how much I enjoyed assisting the band at Pontin's this weekend. Thank you
so much for inviting me, and making me feel so welcome and part of the
team.
Thanks especially go to Mel for her organisation, and keeping me informed at all times, and to Liz who allowed me to play a short solo passage, something I love to do on the contest stage. And thanks for the social as well, especially Pete's singing on the coach! I don't think I've laughed so much in years! Hope to see you all again soon. Neil Johnson, Solo Euphonium - Knottingley Silver Band |
| 15/10/2006 | I would just like to thank the
band for the wonderful donation you made in support of Brass Band Aid. As
you will have no doubt read in the various articles, the project is
underway and with any luck should be completed at the back end of next
year. Every penny really does make a difference to the community in Adet
Ethiopia, so your donation will make a real difference. On a personal
note, BBA has been the source of incredible joy to me and restored my
faith in the Banding movement. I am only too well aware of the delicate
balance that most Brass Bands have to master in order to keep going,
particularly with little or no sponsorship, so donations like this are all
the more important.
Many thanks once again. Bob Thompson - Brass Band Aid |
| 11/09/2006 | Many thanks to you all for my
long awaited CD. It arrived via Kirsty and very good it is too. Look
forward to seeing the Band again over Christmas at Howden. Good luck to
you all.
Regards Les Lee |
| 05/09/2006 | A short note to say that the CD
(The Deep) arrived yesterday and that I have played it through twice
already. I am much taken with both the playing and the programme. I will
also say that I note you chose the option I rather liked for the CD cover.
Much impressed!!
My thanks to the Band Nicholas Lamb |
| 28/08/2006 | Hello everyone.
Really enjoyed browsing the Band's website. Especially pleased you are doing so well. Please give my best wishes to Jim Davies. Also liked looking at the old photos. When I was part of the Band we used to nominate a number of awards to individuals, like the ones that Kirsty and Shaun won this year. I'd like to nominate Vicki Kennedy as the "Baby of the Band" award, as you can see from the picture below, she has been playing the cornet since she was a baby!! Good luck for the future Bob & Lorraine Childs
PS. She's going to kill me for this! |
| 03/07/2006 | As an East Yorkshireman in exile
in Cumbria I have been so pleased to listen to your concerts in
Cockermouth in recent years.
Last Saturday's was the best for some time - thank you all very much. David Cornwall |
| 12/05/2006 | Have just spent an enjoyable
half hour looking through the EYMS web site, I am pleased to see that a
few old faces are still there , plus a lot of new ones. I am looking
forward to seeing the Band play in Scunthorpe later this month and hope to
catch up.
An ex-Horn/Cornet player of no real substance (ask Garry O, who I had the privilege of sitting next to for a year, and he only remembered my name when I had left). Peter Gallagher |
| 12/05/2006 | We wish the Band good luck for
the contest at Blackpool - look forward to hearing the results and no
doubt seeing the resulting photos. We have just had a campervan holiday on
the South Island - being Autumn, the colours are really something. The
picture with the six planes was taken at Warbirds over Wanaka, a biannual
Air show, isn't it a stunning picture? When are you coming down to see our
wonderful country?? Maybe if I send you enough photos of our scenery, you
might give in!

|
| 17/03/2006 | I write on behalf of my Chairman
of Council and all members of St John Ambulance to thank you - and all
members of the Band - for their very kind and generous donation of £800.
Having been to every other concert which the Band has arranged for our benefit, I was most disappointed that a previously arranged engagement prevented me from being there on this occasion. Particularly so, because everyone who did attend said what a marvellous evening it was. I know that these events just don't 'happen' - and that a great deal of work precedes the actual evening and I know from the very glowing comments that I have received, that all that effort was greatly appreciated. Thank you all, once again - and I have to say - (despite the clutter!!), it's good to see you back with us in Popple Street!. Richard Wright - Executive Director |
| 13/01/2006 | Maurice
Once again the Band produced a winning performance at our Christmas Concert and the audience was very appreciative of it! I did thank some members of the Band on the day, as did many other people, but I hope you will pass on our collective formal thanks. Derek Haddrill - Concert Secretary Scunthorpe & District Choral Society |
| 13/09/2005 | Having just viewed your website,
regarding the signing of Steve and Alice, we know you will have two great
people to boost your band. As Steve's Auntie and Uncle, we are naturally
very proud of Steve, and we wish you all the best for future contests.
Sincerely
Bev & Bob Morgan |
| 06/09/2005 | Hi, we are the parents of Steven
and Alice Rudhall, and would love to be kept in touch with what the band
is doing - with them being so far from home, we will miss the band contact
we have had for 30 years. Your website is so informative and looks like a
fun band. We would appreciate being on your emailing list.
Lesley & Reg Rudhall |
| 27/08/2005 | I believe that you will shortly
be gaining a new principal cornet player, your gain is our loss, we will
surely miss Steve and Alice, and wish them all the best.
From our band to yours, we wish you all the best for the future. Best regards Andrew Clark Webmaster - Nelson City Brass www.nelsonbrass.org.nz |
| 28/06/2005 | Good morning Mel,
As I'm sure Shaun has already relayed to you, we all thoroughly enjoyed Saturday night. I've helped a few bands out in the past and never been made to feel so welcome, a feeling which I know Shaun and 'Big Dave' also felt. Once again thanks for everything from Saturday and although you, Stewart and Vicki won't be there, I'll look forward to seeing everyone again on July 16th. Andy |
| 27/06/2005 | Hello everyone - just a quick
note to say thank you for inviting me to come and help out on Saturday
night.
As well as feeling honoured that you asked me to help in the first place, I would like to say a big thank you to one and all, as you made me feel very welcome, and a big thank you for sorting out my travel request out at such short notice too! It was much appreciated. I thought the programme, venue and audience was all that I could wish for and I enjoyed every minute - I would look forward to doing it all over again, should the opportunity arise. Of course, if you ever need any further help in the future, please don't hesitate to ask, it would be my pleasure. The curry, and the few quiet drinks we had afterwards was well appreciated - I had a great time socialising afterwards and got to bed at 4.30am.....(big girl I know!!!...but I am out of practice!!). It was nice to see Liz again too, she seems a bit more normal than the last time I saw her! At least she's started blowing that Euph now... I am quite sure that Tony (Big Dave) Brookes and Softlad enjoyed themselves too, but they will be letting you know themselves I'm sure. I know I'm speaking for the three of us when I say you deserve all the very best for the future and thanks for the opportunity to play under the 'Great' Jim Davies - I hope we could do it again sometime! All the very best and thanks again Shaun R Ps. - It was quite an education all round and thanks to Vicky, at least I'll be able to remember how to tell Bob and Nick apart now, ha ha! |
| 08/05/2005 | Nice to see you, Kathy, Julia
and Paul again this weekend, I attach a couple of the photo's I took,
which you can add to your website library.
See you all again soon Andrew Grady |
| 06/05/2005 | Hi, Paul arrived home safely and
has managed to get himself a new job at Barclays Bank. Hope you haven't an
account with them!! All the best this weekend, you will probably bump into
Iain there.
Good luck, Ann and St Austell Band. |
| 30/04/2005 | .................. that is terrible, but I am
glad you can see the good side of it. EVERY band goes through that sort of
stuff. The band I am playing this weekend from Australia just got kicked
out of their rehearsal venue and have nowhere to go! Anyway good luck on
picking someone. I am sure you guys will attract a very good selection.
Good luck for the competitions too. Right now am planning on playing your
band week after next.
King regards and thanks for the info Peter Ryan |
| 06/04/2005 | .................. I was very sorry to hear
about the upheaval that has taken place recently within EYMS. Would you
please pass on my best wishes to the band and wish them all the very best
for the future and thank them for showing so much kindness and friendship
to Iain during his time with you. I am very grateful.
Ann McKnight |
| 24/03/2005 | I find it hard to believe that Gareth has
left the band in a better state than he found it!!!! You have lost
principal players and the results have shown this. Lets help that this
lovely band now has found its direction and moves on.
Garry Ornsby After receiving this comment, I felt that it required some response:- Without being in the Band room it would be difficult to accurately comment on what state the Band was left in by Gareth, so I will take your comments with a pinch of salt. However, I was in the Band room last night and we are continuing to move on. The results are only one way of measuring a Band's progress, and especially when a contest(s) are subjected to only a one man adjudicating panel and the obvious short comings of such a system. What is a more accurate measure, is how the Band knows it has played at a contest. If the Band is pleased when it comes off the stage, knowing that everything has gone well, then that is more important than the views and whims of one person. Thanks though for taking the time to comment, and I hope that you will continue to keep an eye on the website to monitor the further adventures of The East Yorkshire Motor Services Brass Band. I hope that you will have no objection to me using your comments/observations in our guest book. |
| 27/02/2005 | Just heard your result. What can I say! You
must all be feeling really gutted. I have just had my ear well and truly
bent by Iain on the phone. David Loukes said the other night that it
wasn't obvious what the adjudicator would be looking for in Rienzi. So
lets wait and see what other strange results come up in other areas.
Regarding my bugle.....to use the words from that famous film "Brassed Off"........"it's a euphonium"!! Regards Ann McKnight |
| 25/02/2005 | All is well darn sarf!!! We are all working
hard for our areas (me at Bugle and Sue at St Austell). I think Shaggers
is breaking you all in gently but I have heard a vicious rumour that he
has discovered that strange implement called an iron. So you never know
his shirt may well be crisp and un creased which will be a first. I think
it is because he didn't have such a wonderful mentor as Iain had! You must
also remember he is Cornish. Say no more. Once again all the best on
Sunday.
Ann Mcknight |
| 24/02/2005 |
Just wanted to wish you all the best for Sunday. Good Luck. Make sure Shaggers doesn't leave anything behind and that he turns up with his shoes on! He has previous for turning up in trainers! Regards Ann McKnight |
| 20/01/2005 |
I write on behalf of my Chairman of Council and all members of St
John Ambulance, to thank you and all members of the band, for their kind and
generous donation of £500. It is, indeed, most kind of you to support our work
in this way.
I would be pleased if you would pass on our gratitude to all members of the band and we trust that our 'harmonious' relationship will continue! Once again, many thanks for your support. Richard Wright - Executive Director |

On behalf of everyone at Bishop Burton Methodist Church, thank you very much indeed for such a wonderful concert at Toll Gavel last Saturday. It was a lovely varied programme and beautifully played - you certainly deserve your championship status and we do wish you well in all your future competitions. We have had so many compliments and do hope you can come and play for us next year. Congratulations to Gareth Pritchard and all the Band Members Yours Sincerely Patricia Byass |

Hello there I enjoyed the concert last Sunday when you joined the Philharmonic Society in their "Deck The Hall" I thought the whole concert was excellent and especially the band's first piece they played which I think was Shostakovich. PLEASE will you tell me what the piece was called as it was wonderful and exciting. Eagerly awaiting your next concert in Grimsby. Best regards, Tessa |

May I say how much I enjoyed your performance on Saturday 6th December at our local Church. The band played to a packed congregation who showed their appreciation of fine brass band music with rapturous applause. The programme of music, selected, introduced and conducted by the affable Gareth Pritchard kept the audience enthralled throughout, and captured the spirit of Christmas with a combination of delightful arrangements, splendid solo pieces and traditional carols. Mark Unsworth's rendition of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, resplendent in an England Team Rugby shirt, was a real show stopper, and Joanna Peacham's haunting performance of Nocturne will remain with me for a long while. Many thanks and I look forward to seeing you and listening to your fine music next Christmas, Mal Kitchen. |

Dear Band, It was great to see the article in the Bandsman a few weeks ago. I know it's kind of old news, but other than cars, things don't travel too fast out here. I hope that everything is going well with the band, and it was great to see you getting a bit of exposure. I hope to see you in concert over Christmas, and catch up with everyone as I haven't seen the band since the Nationals a couple of years ago! Anyway, I hope everyone is really well and that you all have a good Christmas. All the very best, Sam Hairsine |

Hi everyone, just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the concert at Middleton hall, especially the Glenn Miller medley (String of Pearls is my favourite piece of music). Good luck at the Albert hall this year, but I don't think you will need luck as you are all naturals. Angie Graham |

This may seem a little early to be wishing you good luck for the nationals on the 19th October.......... but as things are getting a little hectic with Weddings, Honeymoons, changing jobs etc. etc. etc. I didn't think I would get a chance!!!!! Anyway, it's good to see you have a website at least, and that you are back in the prizes in the major contests, just like the old days (or should that be daze?). Best wishes, and may we bump into each other in the near future !!! Austin |
