I was hoping to get along tonight to have a
listen to the piece. However, events have overtaken me. Can I wish the
band all the best for the weekend. I'm sure Alan has done a great job
preparing the band and you will go onstage and give it 100%. Hopefully
the band will get the result they deserve this time!
I'll hopefully catch up with you all at some point some.

Hi Mark, and all our mates at EYMS
Hope this finds you well. Enjoyed the newsletter v. much, especially
Blowers' story about the cornet he learned to play on. As you may know,
Alice and I are currently in Western Australia where I have a job as a
flight instructor, teaching young Chinese blokes how to fly. We are
not playing at present; there is no band where we are living; I haven't
blown a note since July (cornet's back in NZ) and not likely to for the
best part of a year. While it's nice to have a break, I am starting
to miss it, especially when I read things like Blowers' piece and the fact
you guys are off to Uncle Albert Hall again.
Our little boy, Jack, will be 1 year old in a couple of months; the time
has flown. He is a real darling and we just love him to bits. He and
Alice are currently in Holland visiting Dutch family and friends;
they get back next week. After 5 weeks, I am really missing them.
Sorry to see England knocked out of the Rugby World Cup. Maybe you
Poms could get in behind the All Blacks (??!).
Once again, thanks for the newsletter and I wish you all the best for the
RAH this weekend as well as the gigs coming up.
Best regards,
Steve (& Alice)
P. S. Suggestion for next newsletter: Request you print the lyrics for
that bus song about the engineer's machine. ;-)

Hi guys
Just letting you and our mates in the band
know that we are thankfully not affected by the terrible events in Christchurch.
Alice, Jack and I Iive in Nelson at
the top of the South Island, about 400km away from Christchurch
and did not feel the earthquake which we understand was quite shallow
and therefore localised to that area. I have relatives in
Christchurch and I understand they are fine, although some of
their houses have been seriously damaged and they are without power
etc.
As you can imagine, the disaster has
gripped the nation; Christchurch is our 3rd-largest city and the
largest in the South Island. There'll probably end up being being 100
- 200 deaths, many iconic buildings turned to rubble,
and a multi-year effort re-establish the city centre.
Christchurch is also a major host city for the Rugby World Cup this
year and the condition of the accommodation and stadium may mean
that a major re-jig of that competition will need to be planned and executed.
We are aware that the disaster made
headline news around the world. Help has been offered and
taken up from many countries, including Britain. We know that many
visitors (including Brits) are caught-up in the tragedy, but they
are being looked after and flown out of the area today.
Nice to know that we are being thought
of at this time; rest assured that we in Nelson are absolutely
OK. Our boy Jack is now 2.5 months old, gorgeous, and growing before
our very eyes. I am still looking for flying work, but at least I
am spending plenty of time with Jack!.
Kind regards, Steve

Many Thanks for supporting the Orphans of
AIDS in Malealea Lesotho. Over the last four years members of
the EYMS have entertained the audiences with an excellent
evening of Music. always asking when the next time will be, The
feedback is always positive.
As organiser of the Concerts I am asked if
we would like a programme. I have declined this offer as the audiences
told me they enjoy the introductions to each item, given by the
Conductor, They feel involved and enjoy the humour. they also
enjoy the relaxed atmosphere this creates. Scunthorpe

On Sat. 29th January 2011 we went to a
concert given by yourselves at the Plowright Theatre, Scunthorpe.
We enjoyed the concert very much, the only disappointment was there was
not any programme as to what music was going to be played.
Nevertheless we still very much enjoyed it. One question for
information I would like is what was the first piece of music played,
who composed and arranged it, it was a fitting tribute to the
players and their ability.
A very nice concert.

As a brass band enthusiast I am writing
to tell you how much I enjoyed your performance at the Plowright last

I travel many miles a year attending brass
band concerts throughout the area, and your band is at least as good as

impressed by your principal cornet player (Kirsty Fox), who must surely
be one of the best in the area! She was lovely to listen to!

First of all, thanks for last night - for
coming at short notice and for making the concert really special. I
have to say that it's not often we're treated to such quality performances
in the villages. The Quintet's playing was outstanding, and the
programme was spot on too; the little informal introductions were good
too. I got nothing but positive feedback afterwards - everyone
thoroughly enjoyed the evening so we're really looking forward to you
coming back in the spring.

Please pass on my thanks to the Band for a
splendid concert at the Priory. The program suited exactly the
mood and the event with plenty of variety, and something for everyone.
Congratulations to the soloists, who as usual were a delight - but let's
not forget also a very sympathetic band accompaniment and some lovely pp
endings. Intonation and tuning were spot on and the Band did
not allow the acoustics to overcome them. I recently went to a concert
given by a world class band in similar surroundings - a different type
of concert certainly - where the sound totally obliterated the detail.
Not so EYMS.
The encore One Voice a lovely way to end and
again congratulations to the soloist.
What a nice touch for Kathy and Mark to be
at the door at the close, to give a personal goodnight.
I am looking forward to next years concert.

I just had to write and congratulate you on a
fantastic performance,
from a small age I have always loved the brass band and as I had not been
well for a while, my best friend said she was going to cheer me up (her 2
children sing with the co-op choir) and she bought me a ticket for the
performance on Thursday night. Wow, I was totally blown away and just had
to write and tell you the humour went so brilliantly with the performance
and
would like to congratulate all your members, but must say two stood out to
me - Neil Johnson and Andrew Kennedy - they were fantastic. I am sure you
get told that a lot, but sometimes not enough, and Mr Lippeatt was
brilliant and getting us all involved. Since coming home I have looked up
your site and see you are coming to Scunthorpe and will be trying to get
tickets. Its ironic really I had my 40th birthday this year and would have
loved to have had a brass band or at least got to see one now I have and
it was brilliant so
thank you to one and all for cheering me up, and making me have the most
enjoyable night I have had in a long time. May your success long continue.

I am so pleased to read about the success the
band has had over the years and the way it has maintained it. It is
16 years since I played percussion with what was then the City of Hull
Band and had the pleasure of playing in several concerts and a couple of
contests.
It was reading of the death of Maurice Metcalfe which prompted me to
write. One of the nicest men I ever met and a true supporter of
the band in that he was present for rehearsals, concerts, contests, social
events and just about anything and everything the band did. I've
still got good memories of Maurice and the time I spent with the band both
musically and socially. Please pass on my good wishes to his family
David Ashbridge, former member.

Thank you all for a wonderful evening on
Saturday at Toll Gavel, I truly enjoyed watching you all play again.
I think that you really made an impact on my fiancé - we went in memory

I really found the Euphonium Duet a laugh, Neil & Andrew made it so

good luck with any upcoming contests, and take care.

Hope all is well.
I went yesterday as you know to the Nationals, and heard all of the bands
like I do. I was gob-smacked when I saw where EYMS had come. No way was
your band last!!!! I'd got you 10th and in my opinion, Northop last.
Newstead, Pemberton, Kirkintilloch were just a bit better than that, I was
also amazed at Desfords placing as well. At least the top 4 they were
right, Nick with Dyke was just awesome, and Bob with Cory likewise. Fodens
were great, and I felt Rothwell gave a really fresh clean performance as
well. I would not have liked to have been in the box trying to sort out
the top 3 well places 2&3. The piece was a fantastic piece and it was
good to see the hall fairly full when lesser bands were on stage rather
than about 100 that sometimes are in. Anyway take it from me that your
band put on a really good show and the result you got did not reflect your
performance at all.
All the best, take care.

Thoroughly enjoyed the concert: from the
sparkling start Lohengrin ( I have a very scratched 1957 version
played by 'Men o Brass') to the thunderous ending of Procession to the
Minster with a varied middle of excellent soloists and variety of music.
The Band goes from strength to strength, has a lovely sound but I
especially appreciated the control and tunefulness of the quieter
'long notes'.
I always feel inspired to go home and
practice after listening to EYMS.
I see that the band has a very busy
schedule not often enough around Bridlington, but Cockermouth must have
been a day and a half. We were there 2 weeks ago to visit Wordsworth's
house but at least we started from Grange over Sands!
Look forward to hearing you next year if not before. Best wishes for
the finals and maybe this year the Band will make the frame.

Hi Guys,
Just a line to say thank you for a most enjoyable evening at The United
Reformed Church in Cockermouth tonight.
The music was excellent, thoroughly entertaining, and you had the audience
eating out of your hands right from the word go, with that opening piece,
Lohengrin. It must be quite a difficult task to play something usually
associated with an orchestra, in brass, never mind to do as you did, that
is, bring it up to orchestral standard! That could have been LSO playing
tonight!
Absolutely loved the entertainment factor as well. I believe it's most
important to keep an audience with you, and the mixture of excellent
musical standards interspersed with a little light comedy and high jinks
worked an absolute treat. Too many times, I have been to concerts that get
bogged down with high brow stuff, and, whilst they may be technically
brilliant, tend to lose the audience a bit as a result. You had us in the
palms of your hands right up to the encore.
I am a member of a small, seedling band here in West Cumbria, namely
Cleator Moor Brass (CMB), and about half our own members were in your
audience tonight. I'm sure I speak for the rest of them as well as myself
when I say we drew some positive inspiration from you tonight. We are
slowly building a repertoire of good tunes, but may have a bit of a way to
go before we meet on the same stage! Our latest project is to launch a
youth section, and try to encourage the next generation into what could
give them a lifetime of pleasure, as well as keep this vital part of our
culture & heritage alive, and a future to look forward to. Anyone
interested can find out more on www.cleatormoorbrass.co.uk
Anyway, thanks once again, and please do come back to Cumbria soon!

very entertaining! Well done!

Best wishes on a great win. I

got the phone call off Mel to say we won. All the soloists played great!
It was a solid performance from all. My inbox is full of complimentary
comments from well wishers and it was a lovely feeling to conduct my old
band again. I was pleased to hear John won the sop prize, the canon was
spot on. Was there ever any doubt the basses wouldn't win 'Best Basses?'
Neil Cornet should have been given the cornet prize, (he was a star all
week) and somebody should tell the organisers to make a euph prize so
Neil Euph can pick it up.
Massive thanks to Mel and Stew for
looking after me.
Great success for the rest of the
year.

Hi All
BLOODY FANTASTIC
Congratulations to you all, brill result,
right chuffed for everyone, well done.
Good luck in Blackpool, unfortunately, I
won't be there this year as my first child will be born on the 9th
May, bad planning for a bandsman that one. Little boy due, don't
worry he won't be a cornet player, something to do with genetics ha

Keep up the good results, Cheers

I was very sad to hear of
Maurice's passing. I used to play in the Hull Youth Brass Band and the
City of Hull Youth Symphony Orchestra in the late 70's early 80's and
remember Maurice very well from then as being very helpful to everyone he
met, as well as being a great supporter of music in Hull in many ways (I
am sure he gave me many lifts as well as help with my valves from time to
time!) My condolences to his family

I
was very sad to learn today about Maurice’s passing this October.
I
grew up playing 2nd cornet with the band, and remember Maurice
very fondly indeed. As a “nipper” having my first taste of
“banding”, Maurice was my band ”granddad”.
He
was ever-present, usually found smiling away whilst shifting chairs,
fixing valves, or offering words of support and encouragement, even though
he was usually as nervous (or more nervous!!!) than the players! He looked
after us all not only at rehearsals, but onto the bus, off the bus, onto
the stage, and even back onto the bus after the inevitable post-contest
drinks.
I
am very pleased to see that the band are still doing very well indeed,
which is in no small part due to the hard work that Maurice tirelessly and
selflessly put in. His commitment was way above and beyond the call of
duty, and the concert planned for September next year will be a wonderful
and fitting tribute – if I’m anywhere near East Yorkshire I will
definitely be there.
Best

Maurice
Metcalfe – the words that have been written here about him before
mine, describe him as he was. To me he was a friend, a gentleman, and
devoted member of our Band. I first became associated with the Band in
1990. My husband Stewart joined the Band on Soprano Cornet to play
with them after their first contest in the fourth section. He remained
a member for some years, moving into the Championship Section with the
Band, and was a member of the Band that played at the Royal Albert
Hall for the first time in 1996, gaining their best result there yet.
Maurice was such a proud man that day.
For
us, this was a family band with Bob Childs - my brother - at the helm.
Our family band included Maurice, his wife Monica, and their son Andy.
They were very special times for us all.
After
a short break Stewart returned to the Band and the family that we
loved so much – EYMS Band - our daughter Vicki, also became a part of
that family. We all have a special relationship with each other in the
Band, one you don’t often get, we all look after each other, and
Maurice was certainly the ‘father’ of this family.
I
will miss him dearly - who will make me a cup of coffee and chat to me
now when I sit in rehearsals for two hours……
This
has been a difficult time for us all, and I would like to thank Tony
Newiss for all the communication he has had with Maurice's family,
and for making the arrangements with them on behalf of the Band. I
would also like to thank Mark Unsworth for keeping the Band, and our
friends, up to date with the funeral arrangements through the website,
for paying a special tribute to Maurice with his caring words on the
News page, and for the emotional task of posting the tributes made to
Maurice on the Guest Book. When I have read these tributes they have
touched me, they have raised a tear and a smile, thanks Mark this must
have been difficult for you at times, but for all of us in the EYMS
family and the Metcalfe family I know they have helped.

Bob
and I were very saddened to hear of Maurice's death. Whenever we
went to a concert Maurice would be somewhere near the door, looking very
smart, busy with different jobs but he always made time to
have a word or two with us. He was a real gentlemen who worked very
hard for the Band and its players, and he will be sorely missed by so
many. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family, friends and
all the members of the Band.

On behalf of the North

the family of Maurice and to the Band, of which we know he was such a
pivotal part.
Maurice became a good
friend over the years of myself and of other members of the Regional
Committee, and as a band secretary he was a gentleman in everything that
he did, and the way he did things. I have no doubt that the success of
EYMS Band in such a few short years was a testament to his efforts.

Thank you for the wonderful comments you have
made regarding my Grandfather. I never realised he was appreciated by, and
touched the hearts of so many different people. Your comments mean the
world to me, and my family. I know his memory will live on, and I hope all
of you at EYMS Brass Band will help us to remember him for the kind-hearted,
well mannered man he was. Even though he has gone - he is still
watching over us and will be a part of me forever.
On behalf of the whole family, I would like to thank the EYMS Brass
Band for making my Granddad an extremely happy man, your
Band meant the world to him. We will still keep in contact with the Band,
and even come to some of your concerts as we know this will mean the world
to him.
Thank you for all the happy years you gave my Granddad.

We were very saddened to hear of our mate
Maurice's death. He was a lovely guy who never raised his voice or
said a bad thing about anyone. He was always helpful in a myriad of

of Hull. Maurice will be sorely missed by us, and we have

Though not having been an active member for
EYMS for a couple of years, I have fond memories of Maurice. He was so
very kind, and always thought of others, rather than himself. He did so
much for EYMS and will be missed immensely by people of the band, and many
others I'm sure - myself certainly.
He seemed to happy with life when he'd recently become so much more mobile
with his "new" knees. So sad to have it all taken away again, so
soon after. I hope he is at peace.

We would like
to pass on our condolences to Maurice’s family after the terrible loss
of a true Gent.
The work that
he put in to the Band was relentless.
The fact that
his son played in the Band during the early days and then moved on, never
stopped Maurice continually working for the Band for many years to come.
His ability to
repair instruments from rolling out dents to major reconstruction was
fantastic.
As much as he
envied the players in the Band, we envied his ability to magic these
instruments back to working order.
It was a
pleasure to have known Maurice and he will be greatly missed.

Dave, and Garry Ornsby.

Please pass on my thoughts to Maurice's family
at this sad time.
Maurice was the
quiet man behind the success of the EYMS Band.
An accomplished engineer who took on everything thrown at him by the
Band, from the day the Band started. From secretary, book keeper,
administrator, fund raiser, fee negotiator, mediator, plus taking
responsibility for getting everyone to the right place at the right time.
Everyone just rang Maurice, to check what time the rehearsal was, or what
time the coach was leaving! Maurice would take on any role with great
thoughtfulness whilst
muttering to himself "this is not my area of skill, I am only an
aircraft engineer, you know".
A role Maurice did enjoy and performed brilliantly was the RAC/AA man of
brass bands. He could provide emergency repairs to get you through a
concert or contest, plus serious repairs to put instruments right again
permanently. Anyone fortunate enough to see his self made workshop, inside
his garage, will have seen first hand his ability to make a gadget to sort
out any malfunction. He certainly saved me a fortune by fixing my bass
when I turned up on his doorstep on many occasions.
Maurice's sustained commitment to the EYMS Band is an inspiration to all
generations. He attended more rehearsals than any other band member and
he never played a note. He welcomed many players and conductors into the
band, all with the same generous, friendly attitude, that he extended to
all who met him.
Maurice was one of the few people in this life who would give, and
expect nothing in return.
I am very privileged to say I knew him well whilst involved with the
band for 10 years. I only wish I had bought him that pint I owed him.

I am truly stunned at the
passing of Maurice.
I know many people have
said it already but he truly was a real gent. Considering he was
never (to my knowledge) a player he took a real interest in the workings
of the band and was always offering assistance and was keen to help in any
way he could – it could probably be said that his attendance at
rehearsals was more regular than some of the players.
As a West Country boy we
often had a discussion on our differing accents … I could sometimes
never understand him and he could often not understand me … but between
us both we managed to communicate.
He was a true bandsman,
who never played a wrong note, and my time with EYMS in my student days
will always include Maurice as an integral part of those memories.
My condolences to his
family and friends and players he has left behind.
My best wishes to all
concerned.

Really sad to hear of Maurice's passing, such

Will you please thank each and every member
of The East Yorkshire Motor Services Brass Band, what a
lovely evening we had. Everyone in the audience so enjoyed your
expertise. I listened to comments as
the everyone made their way home, and they were all of praise and
admiration for a splendid night of music. It was very touching to see so
many of the audience make their way to their seats with the help of
their walking sticks used by shaky hands. I overheard one gentleman
say he had been looking forward to the evening since it had first been
advertised.
Mr Ken Dunn and my son, Richard, who lead
the expedition to Malealea, would like to thank you most sincerely for
giving your time and talents to such a worthy cause. We can help so many
young Orphans in Malealea, Lesotho to continue their education in High
School. The Orphans sponsored have to
show excellent potential and pledge to educate their own brothers
and sisters (a very big commitment). The
first pupils to be sponsored in 2003 (three of them) have, on
January 1st 2008 begun a degree course at Capetown University. Mr
Dunn is so delighted for them and this makes the
work so very worthwhile. That is why I have pledged that every
penny raised will go to the education of these young people.
I know I am thinking in advance but would
you consider coming once again to The Plowright Theatre for the
same cause next Year about the same weekend as this? I will of course
have to book the Theatre but would appreciate your views on this.
Thank you again

Regarding the photo of the Band in the
archive, the one taken in Victoria Galleries in the City Hall. It is
myself, Louise Dalby, on the front row next to Melanie Kennedy. I played
Cornet with the Band in the early 1990's, I used to be taught by Dixon
Laing when I was at 6th form college. I can't remember the exact years I
played with the Band, but I had to leave probably around 1992 when I
started work as a nurse, as my shift work left me unable to commit to the
Band.

Hi there, my name is Doug Jobling, and I

standing ovation!

To Jim Davies and all at the EYMS Band.
It was tremendous to see you all again on Saturday at the Nationals and
catch up with you at the Mews for a few cups of tea afterwards!
I am genuinely delighted for you with your excellent 12th placing in a
pretty strong field at the weekend - I know you all work very hard and
this will be a good reward for your efforts!
I'm looking forward to the release of your latest CD and will see you all
again soon I am sure.
All the best and many congratulations once again!

I received your new CD. Thank you very much.
There's some great playing on there. I was impressed by the playing of
Steve Rudhall. Please thank him. You have good corner men in the
band.... not just "men", Kathy did a nice job on Time For
Peace..... I recently recorded this with Joe Alessi from the New York
Philarmonic. I'll have to send you one.
I hope you were happy with my contribution to
the program notes. I had forgotten I wrote them. I enjoyed the
playing of my pieces. There was lots of excitement. All in all it is a great CD. The
important thing is that the band sounds like they
were having fun. Thanks again for sending the CD. It
was a surprise when I opened my mailbox. Please give my best to
the band.....

Mr Shipp
On Wednesday 11th July, my wife and myself along with
the rest of the audience at Priory Church, Bridlington, were treated to an
excellent Concert by the EYMS Brass Band which is sponsored by your
Company. I would like to give a big thank you to you and your Company for
sponsoring such a talented group of musicians.
Your sponsorship achieves 3 things - it gives EYMS good
publicity, it allows a very good Band to keep performing, and it gives us,
the public, very good entertainment. This is a commodity sadly lacking in
many cases these days.......

Loved the concert
with some excellent playing, though the acoustics did not favour you in
the louder pieces. Soloists were very good. I liked especially the euphonium
and trombone solo (now there's an old one - the piece not the
player)......
...Like the website, very professional, easy to work and
UP TO DATE. Excellent.
Hope you do well in the finals

Hi everyone
Just a quick note to say thanks to you all for making me
feel so welcome, and part of the team at the weekend.
Special thanks to Kirsty for looking after me on the

Hope all goes well with the tour, and look forward to
seeing you all again soon.

Hello
Very sorry to hear that Dan and Liz have left the Band.
Dan was a founder member of the Band when we formed many years ago. He was
a pupil of Dixon Laing and was always a loyal and courageous member when I
was the conductor. I don't know Liz as well, but did hear her play
recently when she was in Cardiff and I was really impressed by her
musicality and technical ability. I wish them both all the best and hope
they continue playing.
Best wishes

I travelled from
Oxfordshire to watch my daughter singing on Sunday and would like to
congratulate you for the quality of performance from the Band. Having only
heard this work played by an orchestra, I was expecting you to be too
powerful for a school choir, but this was not the case. You might have
easily drowned the choir, but instead the playing was sympathetic, with a
lovely tone and depth.
Many thanks

Congratulations to
all members of the Band, including those behind the scenes, for giving an
excellent performance at your first concert in Hessle Town Hall. The sound
was superb, as were the chosen pieces played so beautifully by everyone.
Only one downside - the concert was not long enough - we
could have listened for another hour at least! Good luck to you in any
forthcoming competitions, and we really do look forward to seeing you at
the Town Hall again. Sooner rather than later.
Kind regards
Kathy West - Town Clerk, Hessle Town

Thanks especially go to Mel for her organisation, and
keeping me informed at all times, and to Liz who allowed me to play a
short solo passage, something I love to do on the contest
stage.
And thanks for the social as well, especially Pete's
singing on the coach! I don't think I've laughed so much in years!
Hope to see you all again soon.

I would just like to thank the
band for the wonderful donation you made in support of Brass Band Aid. As
you will have no doubt read in the various articles, the project is
underway and with any luck should be completed at the back end of next
year. Every penny really does make a difference to the community in Adet
Ethiopia, so your donation will make a real difference. On a personal
note, BBA has been the source of incredible joy to me and restored my
faith in the Banding movement. I am only too well aware of the delicate
balance that most Brass Bands have to master in order to keep going,
particularly with little or no sponsorship, so donations like this are all
the more important.
Many thanks once again.

Hello everyone.
Really enjoyed browsing the Band's website. Especially
pleased you are doing so well. Please give my best wishes to Jim Davies.
Also liked looking at the old photos. When I was part of the Band we used
to nominate a number of awards to individuals, like the ones that Kirsty
and Shaun won this year. I'd like to nominate Vicki Kennedy as the "Baby
of the Band" award, as you can see from the picture below, she
has been playing the cornet since she was a baby!!
Good luck for the future

Have just spent an enjoyable

We wish the Band good luck for
the contest at Blackpool - look forward to hearing the results and no
doubt seeing the resulting photos. We have just had a campervan holiday on

picture with the six planes was taken at Warbirds over Wanaka, a biannual
Air show, isn't it a stunning picture? When are you coming down to see our
wonderful country?? Maybe if I send you enough photos of our scenery, you
might give in!

I write on behalf of my Chairman
of Council and all members of St John Ambulance to thank you - and all
members of the Band - for their very kind and generous donation of £800.
Having been to every other concert which the Band has
arranged for our benefit, I was most disappointed that a previously
arranged engagement prevented me from being there on this occasion.
Particularly so, because everyone who did attend said what a marvellous
evening it was.
I know that these events just don't 'happen' - and that
a great deal of work precedes the actual evening and I know from the very
glowing comments that I have received, that all that effort was greatly
appreciated.
Thank you all, once again - and I have to say - (despite
the clutter!!), it's good to see you back with us in Popple Street!.

Hi, we are the parents of Steven

Good morning Mel,
As I'm sure Shaun has already relayed to you, we all
thoroughly enjoyed Saturday night. I've helped a few bands out in the past
and never been made to feel so welcome, a feeling which I know Shaun and
'Big Dave' also felt.
Once again thanks for everything from Saturday and
although you, Stewart and Vicki won't be there, I'll look forward to
seeing everyone again on July 16th.

Hello everyone - just a quick
note to say thank you for inviting me to come and help out on Saturday
night.
As well as feeling honoured that you asked me to help in
the first place, I would like to say a big thank you to one and all, as
you made me feel very welcome, and a big thank you for sorting out my
travel request out at such short notice too! It was much appreciated.
I thought the programme, venue and audience was all that
I could wish for and I enjoyed every minute - I would look forward to
doing it all over again, should the opportunity arise.
Of course, if you ever need any further help in the
future, please don't hesitate to ask, it would be my pleasure.
The curry, and the few quiet drinks we had afterwards
was well appreciated - I had a great time socialising afterwards and got
to bed at 4.30am.....(big girl I know!!!...but I am out of practice!!).
It was nice to see Liz again too, she seems a bit more
normal than the last time I saw her! At least she's started blowing that
Euph now...
I am quite sure that Tony (Big Dave) Brookes and Softlad
enjoyed themselves too, but they will be letting you know themselves I'm
sure.
I know I'm speaking for the three of us when I say you
deserve all the very best for the future and thanks for the opportunity to
play under the 'Great' Jim Davies - I hope we could do it again sometime!
All the very best and thanks again
Shaun R
Ps. - It was quite an education all round and thanks to
Vicki, at least I'll be able to remember how to tell Bob and Nick apart
now, ha ha!

.................. that is terrible, but I am
glad you can see the good side of it. EVERY band goes through that sort of
stuff. The band I am playing this weekend from Australia just got kicked
out of their rehearsal venue and have nowhere to go! Anyway good luck on
picking someone. I am sure you guys will attract a very good selection.
Good luck for the competitions too. Right now am planning on playing your
band week after next.

I find it hard to believe that Gareth has
left the band in a better state than he found it!!!! You have lost
principal players and the results have shown this. Lets help that this
lovely band now has found its direction and moves on.
Garry Ornsby
After receiving this comment, I felt that it required
some response:-
Without being in the Band room it
would be difficult to accurately comment on what state the Band was left
in by Gareth, so I will take your comments with a pinch of salt. However,
I was in the Band room last night and we are continuing to move on.
The results are only one way of
measuring a Band's progress, and especially when a contest(s) are
subjected to only a one man adjudicating panel and the obvious short
comings of such a system. What is a more accurate measure, is how the Band
knows it has played at a contest. If the Band is pleased when it comes off
the stage, knowing that everything has gone well, then that is more
important than the views and whims of one person.
Thanks though for taking the time to
comment, and I hope that you will continue to keep an eye on the
website to monitor the further adventures of The East Yorkshire
Motor Services Brass Band. I hope that you will have no objection to me
using your comments/observations in our guest book.
|
| 27/02/2005 |
Just heard your result. What can I say! You
must all be feeling really gutted. I have just had my ear well and truly
bent by Iain on the phone. David Loukes said the other night that it
wasn't obvious what the adjudicator would be looking for in Rienzi. So
lets wait and see what other strange results come up in other areas.
Regarding my bugle.....to use the words from that famous
film "Brassed Off"........"it's a euphonium"!! Regards
Ann McKnight |

All is well darn sarf!!! We are all working
hard for our areas (me at Bugle and Sue at St Austell). I think Shaggers
is breaking you all in gently but I have heard a vicious rumour that he
has discovered that strange implement called an iron. So you never know
his shirt may well be crisp and un creased which will be a first. I think
it is because he didn't have such a wonderful mentor as Iain had! You must
also remember he is Cornish. Say no more. Once again all the best on
Sunday.
Ann McKnight |

Hello there
I enjoyed the concert last Sunday when you joined the Philharmonic Society in their "Deck The Hall"
I thought the whole concert was excellent and especially the band's first piece they played which I think was

Eagerly awaiting your next concert in Grimsby.

May I say how much I enjoyed your performance on Saturday 6th December at our local Church. The band played to a packed congregation who showed their appreciation of fine brass band music with rapturous applause.
The programme of music, selected, introduced and conducted by the affable Gareth Pritchard kept the audience enthralled throughout, and captured the spirit of Christmas with a combination of delightful arrangements, splendid solo pieces and traditional carols.
Mark Unsworth's rendition of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, resplendent in an England Team Rugby shirt, was a real show stopper, and Joanna Peacham's haunting performance of Nocturne will remain with me for a long
while.
Many thanks and I look forward to seeing you and listening to your fine music next Christmas,
Mal Kitchen. |

Dear Band, It was great to see the article in the Bandsman a few weeks ago. I know it's kind of old news, but other than cars, things don't travel too fast out here. I hope that everything is going well with the band, and it was great to see you getting a bit of exposure.
I hope to see you in concert over Christmas, and catch up with everyone as I haven't seen the band since the Nationals a couple of years ago! Anyway, I hope everyone is really well and that you all have a good Christmas.
All the very best, Sam Hairsine |

This may seem a little early to be wishing you good luck for the nationals on the 19th October.......... but as things are getting a little hectic with Weddings, Honeymoons, changing jobs etc. etc. etc. I didn't think I would get a chance!!!!! Anyway, it's good to see you have a website at least, and that you are back in the prizes in the major contests, just like the old days (or should that be daze?).
Best wishes, and may we bump into each other in the near future !!!
