Sports Day

9th July 2006

Following our afternoon concert at the Bishop's Palace Lawns, Howden, the Band were invited back to Dave and Kirsty's for a barbecue, a couple of beers, and then what turned into a sports day, or alternative world cup final. Strange though that they waited until the Band's two qualified football coaches had left!

Before the fun started - a band can't play on an empty stomach, so Dave was slaving over the proverbial hot stove for much of the evening.

The beer in Dave's hand, and the spare on the barbecue are not for drinking. They are there to marinade the cooking meat - otherwise known as putting the fire out!

Introducing our umpire for the afternoon, Pete 'Dickie Whistle' Arden.

First up in goal is Steve 'The Cat' Gibson. Notice the perfect placing of hands by the defender to the left of the picture.

Andrew 'Waddle' Kennedy ready for his first kick. Why Waddle? Just think of dodgy hairstyles!

Other goalies for the afternoon included the aforementioned Waddle (too busy posing for the camera to realise that the ball's already in the net. Deano, with his unusual Hawaiian shuffle style of keeping, and Danny just about to be nutmegged by this speeding ball!

A quick refreshment break, before Deano steps up for his all important shot.

Note the poor technique, the head should have been over the ball to keep the shot low, and transferring the bottle to the left hand would have helped the overall balance.

That's better, head over the ball, but judging by the angle of Steve's right foot, the shot has been pulled and he misses the goal completely!

Danny demonstrates the perfect follow through, but once again the pressure has got to the penalty taker, head behind the ball and.................

What happened next?

Yes! That's correct. Danny is on his way to the neighbours to ask the question - Can I have my ball back please?

Look at that, head over the ball, eye on the point of connection.........................and it's a girlie!

Following the football it was time to introduce that old favourite - the sack race.

Vicki is the first to have a practice go.

Fortunately for Vicki, unfortunately for us, the next shot failed to come out. Smile for the camera, then fall flat on your face!

Watched closely by the umpire, the official starter sets Vicki and Liz off, on their marathon 8 yard dash.

Too busy laughing, Liz comes in a distant second.

Andrew storms into the lead, but there again the tiger should always be quicker than the crocodile.

Always the gentleman, Peter gives his wife Jane a head start. Though from the look of the bag, Jane is making her tiger run backwards!

A capacity crowd looks on as.......

....... Pete is interfered with on the difficult turn.

Luckily for all concerned, the umpire is right on the spot to make his final decision.

The winner is ..............................
