Summer Concerts and Awards Night

2008

During the summer of 2008, the Band performed concerts in several local venues, as well as once again having the Awards Night at the 'Band Pub' The Minerva.

Cottingham Civic Hall

7 June

Conductor for the evening David Horn, opens the concert with the march 'The Champions', following the Band's winning performance at the Senior Cup Competition in May.
Guest Principal Cornettist Neil Day takes it easy as his solo approaches. Doesn't everyone look happy!
David introduces Neil to the audience, and his chosen solo for the evening 'El Cumbanchero'.
A masterful performance made to look easy.
Kathy Newiss under close scrutiny from her Dad in the audience! Solo Horn Player Alison Grantham dazzles in 'Demelza'.
And then the big introduction to the Trombone soloist. Marks' parents were listening to their eight-year old practising away on his trombone while their dog loudly howled at his side.
Finally, Mark's Dad said: "Mark, why don't you play something the dog doesn't know?"
Mark's performance of 'Trombonology' was a touch on the lively side.
The camera doesn't quite catch the speed that the slide is moving at.
James doesn't look too convinced. The calm before the storm.
James Cliff, and the brand spanking new drum kit. Neil Johnson performing Robert Redhead's demanding solo 'Euphony'.
Time for a breather. And another one!
Then the big finish. Time for a dance!

The encore Salsa Tres'Prada

The big finish! Time for a bow.

St Mary's Church, Elloughton

5 July

For the second year running the sun shone on the Elloughton Garden Party Day, but the rain that had fallen on the days leading up to the event meant that the normal outdoor performance had to cancelled due to the wet ground. Instead, the Band performed an impromptu concert inside St Mary's Church. The Band conducted by Garry Oglesby performed a 'light' concert to a constantly changing audience.

Band Awards Night - Minerva Hotel

5th July

On Saturday 5th July following the afternoon concert for our sponsors, the East Yorkshire Motor Services Group Limited, the Band got together at their 'local' pub 'The Minerva', for a social evening  to celebrate the past year at the annual awards night.

There were various light hearted 'silly' awards presented to several members of the Band for their contributions in the last 12 months, in an awards ceremony hosted and presented (using the latest cutting edge technology) by the Band's answer to Davina McCall - Alison Grantham.

John Mathews receives the 2008 Band Lookalike award on behalf of the absent Karl Kirk - aka Freddie Starr.

Mark Unsworth receives two awards on behalf of the absent Jez Kearney, the 'Late Sam Kind' award for arriving late to a concert at the City Hall, plus the 'BT It's For Youhoo' award for having his mobile ring just after he got settled on the stage.

Once the tears of laughter had been dried, the build up to the serious awards began. The Band has in the past presented two awards, 'Most Improved Player', and the 'Presidents Award for Outstanding Contribution'. The second award is voted for by members of the Band, and the first is decided upon by the Band's Musical Director, - however, as we have recently been going through the process of appointing a new Musical Director, it was decided to place this award on hold until next year's Awards evening. The committee decided that there should be a new award, to be presented to the 'Players' Player Of The Year'. Along with the Outstanding Contribution Award, this was voted for by the Band by secret ballot. The results were known only to one person, Band Secretary Maurice Metcalfe, and he made the presentations to:-

Stewart Kennedy - Players' Player Of The Year.
