Flugel
Horn - Kathy Newiss
Kathy began to play the Tenor
Horn at the age of 11, before changing to the Trumpet a couple of years
later. Throughout her teens, Kathy played the Cornet, and the Trumpet in
the Hull Music Service bands and orchestras, before joining the Hessle
Royal British Legion Band, where she entered the world of contesting. In
1989, Kathy left Hessle to became a founder member of East Yorkshire
Brass, where she played Repiano Cornet, before moving on to ‘bumper
up’. The band was successful, and gained promotion through the sections
from 4th to Championship section. Kathy took a few years out
and returned to the band (which was now called Aunt Bessie’s East
Yorkshire Brass) in 1999. She then moved to East Yorkshire Motor Services
on the front row in 2000, and has enjoyed several appearances at the
National Brass Band Finals in the Royal Albert Hall since then. In
December 2004, the opportunity arose to play the Flugel Horn, a challenge
that she is enjoying immensely. Kathy works as a BTEC course leader, and
beauty therapy lecturer at Hull College. In 2001, she married Tony Newiss
who plays cornet in the band.
In November 2009, Kathy won
the Best Instrumentalist Prize at the final of the Kippax Entertainment
Contest.

Horn - Anita Morrison
Anita's playing career
began at the age of eight as a cornettist, when her father introduced her
to the local brass bands. She played in several local bands including the
Garforth Jubilee Band, and the Micklefield Band, before joining her first
contesting band - the Kippax 'B' Band. It was at this time that
Anita made the transition from Cornet to Tenor Horn.
The Kippax 'B' Band changed
its name to the Allerton Bywater Colliery Band, and contest success
followed, as the Band won the 1988 Fourth Section National Brass Band
Championship. Anita also met future husband Alan during her time at this
band. In 1989 Anita - with Alan - moved to the Gawthorpe Band, at that
time a Fourth section band, but by 1995 had achieved First Section status.
Anita took a break from
banding to concentrate on her family, having two daughters Natalie, and
Laura. In 1999, Anita returned to banding, joining the Kippax Band and spending a very happy 11 years with this band. In October 2010, Anita was
delighted to join the East Yorkshire Motor Services Band, where she enjoys
her banding with husband Alan, and daughter Natalie.

2nd
Horn - Karl Kirk
Committee Member
Karl
started to play the Cornet at the age of 14 at his local comprehensive
school. After playing in the school brass band for 2 years, he then
joined the Grimsby Band (later to be known as the Primo Windows (Grimsby)
Band). This band competed in many contests, and appeared on several
occasions at the 1st section National Finals in London. This contest
success led to promotion to the Championship Section, competing in the
Yorkshire Area at the St George's Hall, Bradford. Following this
promotion, Karl joined the Newark based Air Quick Ransome Band,
moving to the Chesterfield based Rhodian Brass in 1992. It
was with Rhodian that Karl made his first appearance at London's Royal
Albert Hall in the Championship Section. The following year Rhodian came
3rd in the Grand Shield, qualifying to perform in the British Open.
After
a successful time with Rhodian Brass, Karl returned to the now named NSK
Ransome Band - this time moving from Cornet to Tenor Horn. The band
enjoyed a tour of America, as well as contest success - winning the
Midland Area on several occasions, being runners up in the Grand Shield,
(and for Karl another invitation to compete in the British Open) as well
as claiming the runners up position at the National Brass Band Championships in London.
Leaving the NSK Ransome Band, Karl took a years sabbatical from banding,
before joining the Carlton
Main Frickley Colliery Band. Contest
success here included another runners up spot in the Grand Shield,
followed by a top 6 result in the British Open. After an enjoyable two
years with Carlton Main, Karl decided to move to a more local Band,
joining the East Yorkshire Motor Services Band in early 2008.
