Solo Trombone - Mark Unsworth
Treasurer/Trustee
Mark Unsworth was born in Kingston Upon Hull, taking up the
trombone at the age of eleven, progressing through the local authority
bands and orchestras before joining the British Army. As Principal
Trombone in the regimental band of The Kings Own Royal Border Regiment, Mark visited many countries, including Canada, Cyprus, Germany and The
Falkland Islands, as well as completing a one-year course at The Royal
Military School of Music, Kneller Hall. A highlight of this year was
taking part in the Royal Variety Performance at the Theatre Royal, Drury
Lane, London. Following his time in the Army, Mark completed a
three-year course at Salford University, studying trombone with Neville
Roberts and Andrew Berryman, conducting with Dr. Roy Newsome and Dr. David
King, and arranging with Goff Richards. On completion of a one-year
teacher-training course at The University of Durham, Mark taught Physical
Education for ten years. Returning to Hull in 1999, Mark now works as an
administrator. During the years since leaving university, Mark has played for and
recorded with several of the countries top bands including Kennedy's
Swinton Concert, Ever Ready, and since September 2001 The East Yorkshire
Motor Services Band. As well as playing with this Band, Mark is an experienced
big band trombonist doing several stints with the Hull based Frank
Cleveland Orchestra, as well as being a member of the Salford University
Big Band, that won the 1988 BBC Big Band of the Year award.
In
November 2008, Mark won the 'Best Instrumentalist' prize in the final of
the Kippax Knockout Entertainment Contest.

2nd Trombone - Bill Ferrier
Bill comes from Glasgow and
began playing the trombone at the age of 14 years.
Two years later he was playing first trombone in the Glasgow Schools
Concert Band and went on to play solo trombone with Clydebank Burgh Band,
conducted by Nigel Boddice, winning
the John Campbell medal for best trombone at the Scottish Area Championships,
playing ‘Pageantry’. Whilst
studying for a History degree at university, Bill took lessons with Peter Oram,
principal trombone of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Bill then became a history
teacher, and his teaching career has taken him - and his family - all over the
United Kingdom and Germany. First
he moved south to London and then to Essex.
Brass banding took a back seat as he played with many big bands and
orchestras, but was asked by friends in Thundersley Brass to ‘help out for one
contest’ and six years later had played in two National Lower Section Finals
in London.
In 1991, Bill and his family
moved to Germany to take up a teaching post in the Service Childrens’ schools. He spent 12 very happy years in Berlin, and Celle near
Hanover. He played trombone with the Big Band Celle.
The lead trombonist was a young 14 year old, Klaus Heidenreich, now one
of the top professional jazz trombonists in Germany.
In 2003 Bill and family
returned to England, this time settling in Wiltshire.
He got back into brass banding playing with Test Valley Brass, and
Woodfalls Concert Brass. Bill was a
member of Collegium Brass, a semi professional brass quintet which did
educational work and concerts in the south west of England.
He also took lessons with Donal Bannister, now the principal trombonist
of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. It
was at this time he made a career move, turning his hobby into his job by
becoming a peripatetic brass teacher. One
of his schools was Burghclere Primary where he built up the school brass band to
over 40 members (almost half the school), reaching the Music for Youth finals
two years in a row and conducting the band at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham.
In 2009, Bill and his wife
moved to Beverley. Bill has been
very fortunate to find work as a brass teacher with Hull Music Service.
Bill was asked to help out the East Yorkshire Motor Services Band at the
Kippax Entertainment Contest Final (2009), and at the Spring Cup in Blackpool
(2010), receiving only a week’s notice on both occasions.
He was delighted to be asked to join the Band full-time following the
Senior Cup, and is about to fulfil a lifetime ambition by playing at the Royal
Albert Hall with EYMS at the National Championship Finals.
